The gender pay gap in accountancy & finance

GAAPweb’s recent salary survey reveals that the gender pay gap within financial services outstrips the national average by some 35%. The comprehensive research report, which shares insights from more than 4,000 UK accountancy & finance professionals, uncovers that women in finance face a drastically deepening pay divide as they climb the career ladder.

Survey results show that women are paid around £17,400 less than men across all GAAPweb job titles, with males earning an average of £67,384, compared to £49,975 for females. The 35% variance is significantly higher than the 19.2% gender pay gap reported by the Office for National Statistics.

A balanced start
Interestingly, both sides begin on a comparable footing, with junior roles demonstrating relative equality in both the gender split and annual earnings. While Purchase Ledger has the greatest parity (52% male and 48% female), Accounts Payable and Bookkeeper roles are actually dominated by female professionals – representing 74% and 71% respectively. Accounts Payable, Payroll and Purchase Ledger positions also reward women marginally better, with average salaries falling in their favour by £3,000 to £8,000. For example, a male Payroll employee can expect to earn £30,500 per year, while his female counterpart will take home £33,571.

The splintering of mid- and senior-level salaries
At mid-level, however, the figures make a striking about-face. With the exception of Management Accountant roles, where women make in the region of £39,967 (1.6% more than men), males out-earn females across almost every category. For example, the average salary for a female Credit Controller is £27,500, compared to £39,792 for a male in the same job. Finance Manager positions show a £52,823 versus £58,660 divide and Tax roles highlight a contrast of £45,167 versus £39,706.

And while the gap narrows slightly for newly-qualified Accountants and Finance Analysts, Treasury roles show the biggest overall gender pay gap, with men earning 52% more – £63,370 compared to £41,607.

Approaching the C-suite, salary differences – and the gender balance – grow even starker. Among survey participants, 91% of CFOs and 84% of Finance Directors were male, demonstrating a shocking deficit of board-level women. From Financial Planning and Analysis where males were roughly £7,000 better off each year to CFO roles where the gap almost doubled (£105,192 for women versus £119,424), our research lays bare the limited earning potential for females in finance.

The single exception within the survey was Financial Risk where women take home an average salary of £71,563 (7% more than men). The research also revealed that regardless of gender, jobseekers who found a role through GAAPweb make 26% more than candidates who secured a job elsewhere.

Turning the tide
Overall, women earn more than men in only seven of the 22 possible job titles surveyed. But despite the steep slope to pay equality, 54% of the newly-qualified professionals within our survey sample were female, suggesting more women are joining the profession. And a number of industry influencers are championing their cause.

To promote gender diversity following our research, GAAPweb – alongside a range of forward-thinking organisations – has pledged to improve gender diversity at senior level by signing up to the Women in Finance Charter. With 93 current member firms, the charter encourages government and business to work together to build a fairer and more balanced industry.

GAAPweb is proud of our 50% gender diversity within the senior management team of Trinity Mirror Digital Recruitment (the legal entity of GAAPweb). We’re also committed to promoting charter membership to our Banking & Financial Services clients who use GAAPweb to recruit their own senior finance teams.

What is Management Accounting?

Looking to make an impact with your accountancy skills? Management accounting is number crunching with commercial clout. You’ll provide the financial information that drives business and shapes critical decisions, advising managers and leadership teams on company performance, investments, risk and spend.

Analysing financial data and pinpointing past and emerging trends, Management Accountants play a central role in a company’s growth, profitability and productivity from intelligently cutting operational costs and streamlining processes to engineering competitive business strategies. Day to day, you’ll be responsible for budget planning, risk management, financial strategy, accounts preparation, audit, data analysis and team leadership. You’ll also win over the C-suite with charisma, creativity and first-class communication skills.

So you’ll need a head for figures, a flair for business and the fire to succeed at every level. Here’s where to start:

Assistant Management Accountant

While a degree isn’t necessarily a deal breaker when launching your management accounting career, part qualification or CIMA, ACCA or ACA study is a must. Fundamental accountancy and business experience, razor sharp Excel skills and a strong academic record will also give you an edge.

As an Assistant Management Accountant, you’ll typically report to the Financial Controller or (Senior) Management Accountant and cut your teeth with bedrock duties like:

  • Preparing management accounts to tight deadlines
  • Supporting and streamlining month end processes such as managing accruals, monitoring prepayments and reviewing costs to budget
  • Posting month end journals with commentaries
  • Reconciling balance sheets
  • Analysing budget variance
  • Preparing P&L reports
  • Contributing to ad hoc project work

You’ll also enjoy stacks of development opportunities and plot a potential career path leading all the way to the CFO’s office.

Ready to see how it works in the real world? Check out GAAPweb’s Assistant Management Accountant opportunities.

Graduate Management Accountant

A degree demands passion, precision and perseverance – attributes hiring managers hunger for. So if you’ve earned a 2.1 or higher in Finance, Accounting, Maths or Business Studies, have CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualification on your career plan, and can back up your book smarts with relevant job experience, you may have your pick of graduate positions.
As a Graduate Management Accountant, you’ll work closely with more senior Management Accountants, the Financial Controller or Finance Director. They’ll rely on you for fundamental finance and accountancy support – and stretch your skills with higher-level tasks including:

  • Financial performance analysis
  • Cash control, bank reconciliation and associated ledger postings
  • Management accounts consolidation
  • Fixed asset register management
  • Group treasury support

Group Management Accountant

Making the leap to a Group Management Accountant role requires CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualification, solid business experience and the skills – hard and soft – to take on a pivotal, multi-faceted position. You’ll be practised in producing and presenting management and financial information to top-level execs, building gainful business relationships and transforming functional data into inventive, forward-looking strategies.

Often reporting to the Finance Director, Head of Finance or Chief Financial Officer, Group Management Accountants are responsible for:

  • Developing new reporting processes and internal controls
  • Consolidated management accounting – from reporting results and investigating variance to providing analysis and presenting findings
  • Reporting actual results for P&L and balance sheet against budget and forecasts
  • Assisting with year end audits
  • Budgeting, forecasting, modelling and providing ad hoc project management
  • Preparing group annual financial statements

Start the year with a stand-out CV

New Year – time of resolutions, self-reflection and mass career moves. In a market flooded with fresh financial talent, your CV needs to be a door-opening document. Here’s how to keep it polished, professional and straight to the point.

Make a template, then tailor-make
Start big. Capture all your skills, experience and achievements in a beautifully broad template CV, then edit and personalise your content for each position. It’s extra work, but a step too important to skip. Hiring managers want sound evidence of the hard and soft skills their particular role demands, whether it’s team leadership, strategic financial planning or a background in Compliance and Risk. So scrutinise the job spec, pinpoint exactly what they’re after and tailor your CV to tick those boxes.

Go old school with spelling and grammar
We’re pretty slack with syntax these days, but grammar, punctuation and spelling are deal breakers during your job search. After all, they speak volumes about your communication skills and attention to detail. So brush up on basics on a site like Grammarly and proofread meticulously (many, many times). Then check it again before you hit send.

Speak in powerful plain English
Everyone’s dynamic. Everyone’s solutions driven. Cutting meaningless business speak from your CV gives you an instant advantage. Drop the jargon and showcase your performance, industry knowledge and financial literacy with plain, potent language backed up with clear facts and figures – from ramping up ROI analysis to transforming month-end processes.

Be bold, be brief
Use a clean layout, tight word count and easy-on-the-eye fonts and formatting, aiming for two well-crafted pages. Start with a straight-talking personal statement showing off your professional and individual strengths in a couple of solid, shortlist-me sentences. Then follow up with achievement-rich sections covering career history, qualifications, specialist skills, contact details and interests. Short, punchy bullets work best.

Demonstrate fit
You’ve mirrored the job spec. You’ve loaded your CV compelling, customised content. Now convince them you’re an ideal cultural fit by researching the finer details. Check out their website, blogs, social feeds and LinkedIn presence for clues on company ethos, brand personality and employee success stories. Then point to proof of those values at work in your resume. Your application will be significantly stronger for it – plus it’s great prep for interview day.

GAAPweb join leading financial services firms to tackle workplace inequality

GAAPweb, the UK’s #1 job site for accountancy & finance professionals, are among 22 new firms who’ve pledged to improve gender diversity at senior levels by signing up to the Women in Finance Charter.

GAAPweb currently have 50% gender diversity within the senior management team of Trinity Mirror Digital Recruitment (legal entity of GAAPweb). A key target for the team is to maintain our 50% gender diversity in addition to promoting charter membership to our Banking & Financial Services clients who use GAAPweb to recruit their own senior finance teams.

Other new signatories include major financial services firms such as Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Jupiter Asset Management, Zurich Insurance, Allied Irish Bank UK, State Street, the Financial Ombudsman Service, and the trading arm of BP.

These 22 firms employ over 20,000 people in the UK, bringing the total number of Charter signatories to 93.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, said:

“It is great news that almost 100 firms have signed the Women in Finance Charter and are now dedicating themselves to tackling gender inequality.

But there is still further to go. The UK leads the world in financial services, but it can be even better. I want to see a diverse sector run by talented women as well as men, to help secure Britain’s place as a globally competitive economy. The business case is obvious, and the best firms already get this.

I urge more businesses to commit to the Charter – to commit to building an economy that works for everyone”

The Chancellor has appointed Jayne-Anne Gadhia, CEO of Virgin Money, as the government’s official Women in Finance Champion to promote the Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter and the benefits of a diverse workforce across the UK financial services sector. It is estimated that equalising the role of men and women in the labour market could increase GDP by 10% by 2030.
